The City of Tallahassee and Leon County are proud to announce the winners of the Water Atlas Grand Opening Photo Contest. The first place winner was Late Winter Miller Landing by Betsey Kellenberger. She will receive a Wakulla River guided kayak trip for two from Wilderness Way. Black Crowned Night Heron by Ron Piasecki won the second place prize of free gate admission and a riverboat tour for four at Wakulla Springs State Park. Honorable Mention goes to Three In Flight by Michael and Jennifer Chapman.
The photo contest was designed to help promote the joint Tallahassee-Leon County (TLC) online Water Atlas and environmental stewardship in our community. Citizens were invited to submit their favorite photos of local natural resources, waterbodies and wildlife for posting on the Water Atlas website.
Although the photo contest has ended, please continue to submit photos and encourage others to do the same. We would especially like to add more photos to the website that capture scenic views around Leon County's water resources.
First Place: Betsey Kellenberger
Late in the day when the sky looks promising, we drive out to Miller Landing on Lake Jackson to watch the sun go down. On this evening the contrails from passing jets made an interesting pattern with the setting sun creating a beautiful orange background.
Second Place: Ron Piasecki
This picture of a juvenile black crowned night heron was taken while on a Wakulla Springs boat tour, very near to the main spring. More photos are available at the Friends of Wakulla Springs website: http://www.wakullasprings.org/
Honorable Mention: Jennifer and Michael Chapman
We took this photo of three Cattle Egrets in flight on a beautiful spring day at the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. They were just taking off and the white of the birds against the bright blue sky inspired us to reach for the camera.
